Baccarat Hand Values: What You Need to Know

Learn the worth of your hands in baccarat by adhering to these basic rules. Once you learn the system, calculating baccarat hand values is a breeze.

Card Values in Baccarat

The following table displays the baccarat card values that are helpful to know before moving on to learning the baccarat hand values.

The value of an Ace is 1.

The 2 is worth its face value, and so are all the other cards in the deck up to and including the 9.

The value of the 10 is nil.

There is no value in the Jack.

The value of the Queen is nil.

The Kind is worth $0.

The suit of a card has no role in the game of baccarat.  Since a typical shoe contains six to eight cards, the same numbers have a high chance of appearing many times.

Baccarat’s Purpose

Betting on the dealer’s hand or the player’s hand makes no difference in baccarat.  The player wagers on the outcome of the hand they believe will win.  In baccarat, the best possible hand is one that comes closest to the value of 9.  Only two hands are dealt in American baccarat.  The number of active players is irrelevant.  The “player hand” is the one that the player has, whereas the “banker hand” is the one that the bank has.

Values of Baccarat Hands

Although the calculation of baccarat hand values is a little out of the ordinary, the system is easily grasped with a short explanation.  After the following explanation, a few examples will follow, to verify that the procedure of adding up baccarat hand values is well understood.  All players should know how the baccarat hand values are determined, even if the caller will make sure the game is played properly.  In several card games, players take turns dealing cards by passing the shoe between them.  This is why it’s crucial to understand the baccarat hand values.  If they don’t, they have to hand the shoe to the next person and let them have their chance.

The total value of the cards is calculated as follows (using the values given for each card in Baccarat Card Values).  If the sum is more than nine, say 14, then ten is removed from the total, or more simply, the first number (the tens digit) is dropped, and the result is the sum, in this case 4.

Methods of Calculating a Baccarat Hand

The following sums illustrate how the value of individual baccarat hands is added together.

Ace + 2 = 3

To get to the number 3, add 5 to 8 (omit the “ten”).

2 + 3 = 5

9+6=15 (omit the “ten”), which is the same as 5.

3 + 5 = 8

When you add a Jack to an Ace, you get 1 (because a Jack and any other image card add up to 0).

Since 7+4=11 (omit the “ten”), the answer is 1.

The following are some typical 9-value hands.  A natural, also known as the best possible poker hand.

6 + 3 = 9

5 + 4 = 9

9 + Jack = 9

Learn how to calculate your baccarat hand value by looking at these two-card examples.  A hand may receive more than two cards on occasion.  In such a case, proceed in the same manner as described before.
